Estonia reinforces mental health protection for youth in the digital age

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 15:44

Estonia decided to reinforce the protection of young people's mental health in the digital age, aligning with European efforts to ensure the online safety of children and adolescents. The country chose an expert-led prevention approach instead of implementing bans on social media.

The Estonian government recognizes the challenges that prolonged exposure to digital environments represents for the psychological well-being of young people. The implemented strategy involves specialized professionals who work directly with young people to develop safe navigation skills and digital resilience.

This approach distinguishes itself from other more restrictive measures adopted in different European countries, which have resorted to banning or severely limiting access to social platforms. Estonia believes that teaching young people to deal with digital risks is more effective than simply preventing their access.

The program includes training and psychological support adapted to different age groups, seeking to provide young people with tools that allow them to maintain a healthy relationship with technology and social media.
