Laryngeal cancer mortality decreased significantly in Spain in recent decades, especially among men. A study published in the journal Acta Otorrinolaringológica Española, which analyzed national mortality trends between 1999 and 2023, revealed that the age-adjusted mortality rate among men went from 12.10 to 4.76 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a decrease of more than 60%.
In contrast, among women, mortality remained overall stable during the same period. However, the behavior varied according to age group: while it decreased among younger women, it increased significantly from age 55 onwards.
This differential pattern is associated with tobacco consumption, which historically has been more prevalent among men but has been increasing among women over recent decades. The article does not specify other risk factors mentioned in the study.
