Spanish prime minister says there is no evidence of Morocco's involvement in the entry of immigrants in Ceuta

cbn31 August 2026 at 13:36

The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said there is no evidence suggesting that the Moroccan government was behind the mass entry of immigrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta last month. About 70,000 people tried to enter Ceuta, generating a major political and humanitarian crisis in Europe and the region, with approximately 141 deaths recorded.

Although the vast majority of migrants had already returned to Morocco weeks ago, hundreds of people, including minors, still remain on the streets of Ceuta, which has generated tensions with local residents.

Sánchez commented to radio Cadena Ser on Monday that there is no information from any intelligence agency that raises doubts about the involvement of Moroccan authorities. There were speculations that Rabat may have orchestrated the mass crossing as a way to demonstrate its discontent with Spain's rapprochement with Algeria, but Sánchez said there is nothing indicating such involvement.
