Approximately three thousand new nurses are about to enter the job market, but the National Health Service cannot hire them due to delays in approving the organizational development plans for 2026. The Order of Nurses issued a warning about this situation that is limiting SNS units.
The organizational development plans are essential documents that define the human resources needs in health institutions. The delay in their approval means that SNS units do not have authorization to enter into contracts lasting longer than six months, which hinders the integration of these professionals.
This limitation comes at a time when the health system faces growing needs for qualified personnel. With three thousand new nurses trained and ready to practice, the inability to hire them represents a significant obstacle to strengthening SNS teams.
The situation highlights the difficulties in human resources management in the health sector in Portugal, where the need for qualified professionals collides with administrative procedures that delay their hiring.
