The gross government debt reached 82.5% of GDP in July, totaling R$ 10.9 trillion, according to data released by the Central Bank. This is the highest level since April 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when public sector indebtedness totaled 82.6% of GDP.
The calculation includes the federal government, INSS, and state and municipal governments. Compared to June, there was an increase of 0.6 percentage point in public debt.
The monthly rise was mainly driven by nominal interest accrued and net debt issuances, according to Central Bank data.
