A 23-year-old Portuguese man survived a drowning in Zakynthos, Greece, after 79 minutes of resuscitation maneuvers. The case occurred on Friday afternoon, August 21, at a diving spot known as Potamitis, on the north side of the island. Álvaro was at the seabed when the captain of a tourist boat dove to pull him out of the water.
The resuscitation maneuvers were performed by the boat captain and by an obstetrician who was on vacation at the location. The doctor remained for almost an hour trying to resuscitate the young Portuguese man, maintaining basic life support maneuvers throughout that entire time.
One week after the incident, Álvaro is already breathing without intubation, having regained consciousness and being able to talk to his parents. The positive outcome of the case is due to the quick and persistent intervention of the two individuals who were at the scene.
