Bread prices are expected to start rising in Portugal from October, due to the increase in wheat costs and the rise in other costs borne by companies in the sector. The rise in cereals could also later affect pasta, biscuits and confectionery, and indirectly, meat, milk and eggs.
The causes of this increase are linked to the Black Sea war and the drought affecting Europe, which have been causing cereal prices to rise. Portugal may have to look for cereals in other markets to deal with this situation.
Débora Barbosa, president of the Association of Commerce and Industry of Bakery, Confectionery and Similar Trades (ACIP), told the Economic Journal that, since June, raw materials have already started to become more expensive, paving the way for the rise in consumer prices.
