The CHEGA deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, Francisco Gomes, accused the Regional Government of Madeira and the Government of the Republic of not having any serious strategy for the fishing sector in the region. Gomes considered that both governments have been neglecting a sector fundamental to the island's economy and identity.
According to the deputy, the executives have tried to silence the installed discontent among fishermen and boat owners through sporadic and ad hoc support. These measures, in his view, do not solve the structural problems affecting Madeiran fishing activity.
Francisco Gomes reiterated his position that the fishing sector in Madeira has indeed been abandoned by those in government, both at regional and national levels, without any coherent and lasting plan for its revitalization.
