"Today contracts are already weekly and with safeguards for everything"

Jornal de Negócios31 August 2026 at 09:30

António Nabo Martins, executive president of the Portuguese Freight Forwarders Association, spoke about the changes in freight contracts since the pandemic. According to him, contracts are now concluded on a weekly basis and include safeguards for practically everything, a significant change from previous practice.

The official explained that, before the pandemic, freight prices were considered more or less stable. However, currently, according to Nabo Martins, "everything serves" as justification for price increases in the transportation and logistics sector.

The interview addresses the consequences of the pandemic on the freight forwarding sector in Portugal, highlighting the volatility and uncertainty that have come to characterize the international freight market.

NEAFC Measures to Combat Unsustainable Russian Mackerel Fishing Enter into Force

Measures adopted by the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) to combat unsustainable Russian mackerel fishing, proposed by the European Union, have entered into force. Russia unilaterally increased its quota to 67,548 tonnes in 2026, and NEAFC responded by establishing a limit of 1,495 tonnes for Russian catches in international waters. The measure prohibits members from facilitating unsustainable fishing, including transshipments and refueling of Russian vessels above the quota. The EU, the United Kingdom, and Iceland are also applying restrictions within their national jurisdictions, denying port entry to vessels with excess Russian catches. The European Commission emphasizes that additional efforts are needed to recover mackerel stocks, calling for the extension of restrictions and a ban on at-sea transshipments.
