The United States army confirmed the carrying out of a "precision" attack against two platforms intended for the launching of rockets with mines that Iran was preparing to launch in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack, carried out on Sunday August 30, is the first military action against Tehran in about a month, having destroyed the platforms on the Iranian island of Larak. According to a US official cited by CNN, the operation was carried out using drones.
The US military Central Command (Centcom) stated that the placement of mines by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard represented "an imminent threat" in the Strait of Hormuz, a sea lane through which a significant part of hydrocarbons exported globally circulate. The command refuted the Iranian declaration that the attack would have been "an act of aggression," adding that "Iran created the threat and US armed forces eliminated it to protect civilian sailors, commercial maritime transport and the free flow of world trade."
In response, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the launching of attacks against American military bases in Jordan. President Donald Trump had previously warned that any vessel that placed new explosive devices in the strait would be "immediately and systematically destroyed," having also announced the completion of the removal of mines from international maritime routes.
Following the collapse of negotiations to achieve peace and the 60-day deadline for a negotiated solution, Washington announced a new sanctions package against Tehran. However, the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, clarified that the Pentagon had not ruled out continuing to carry out "kinetic attacks" if necessary.
