"Dust devil" scares by lifting ashes left by fires

A dust whirlwind, commonly called a "dust devil", was recorded this afternoon in the area of Seara Velha and Soutelo, in the municipality of Chaves. The phenomenon occurred over an area affected by recent fires, lifting the ashes left by the fires. The recording was captured by locals and shows the whirlwind forming and moving over the charred terrain. This type of meteorological phenomenon is common in areas with dry soil and loose particulate material, such as ashes, and results from the thermal instability of the air near the heated ground.
