BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, announced the appointment of João Robalo Martins as the new Business Director for Portugal, effective this Monday, based in Madrid. The manager will be responsible for the company's activity in Portugal, including the execution of the commercial strategy, deepening client relationships, and growing the investment platform in the country. Portugal is described as one of the markets with the highest long-term growth potential in Southern Europe.
Robalo Martins brings nine years of experience at PIMCO, where he led the competitor's activity in Portugal and managed strategic accounts and segregated mandates in Spain, between London and Madrid. Previously, he was a product specialist in London, linked to PIMCO's multi-asset strategies. His appointment represents a return to the Portuguese market after international experience.
This appointment concludes a period of intense turnover in BlackRock's leadership in Portugal, which now counts its third responsible party in less than a year. The story began in January, when the departure of André Themudo was announced. Since 2011, he had led distribution for the Iberian Peninsula and moved to an international position in the institutional sales team in Mexico. His position was then given to Francisco Guimarães Neto, but his tenure was very brief, lasting only three months, having left in April to join Draycott as partner and head of Investor Relations.
The choice of a manager with direct experience in the Portuguese market, coming from a direct competitor like PIMCO, reflects BlackRock's attempt to stop the recent turnover and consolidate its position in a market it considers a priority in Europe. The institution confirmed that Portugal remains a priority in its strategy for the Iberian Peninsula and that activity is proceeding normally and with continuity.
