Vicente Eixea has dedicated almost half a century to cultivating meló de marjal in Xilxes, a traditional variety from the coastal zone of southern Castellón. This variety is considered one of the most special in the region and its production requires intensive months of care from farmers.
The extreme climatic conditions that have been occurring lately are forcing producers to adapt cultivation calendars and double surveillance over the plantations. Unseasonal rains and high temperatures represent significant challenges for preserving the fruit's quality.
The main objective of farmers is to maintain the characteristic sweetness that consumers seek in this type of melon. The ability to adapt to climate change has become essential to guarantee the viability of this long-standing traditional crop in the Castellón region.
