Stop lying: we would make smarter children if we could

A new study published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour concluded that non-medical characteristics, such as low intelligence quotient (IQ) or antisocial behavior, can significantly influence the choice of embryos for in vitro fertilization (IVF), almost as much as the risk of disease.

The research involved more than 2,000 participants from the United States and China, who were asked about their preferences in embryo selection. The objective of the study was to understand to what extent non-medical characteristics weigh on assisted reproduction decisions.

The results show that, despite what many people may publicly claim, the intelligence and behavior of future children are factors that actually influence the choice of embryos, rivaling in importance considerations about health and genetic diseases.
