He runs, she charts the path: the couple who does marathons in an adapted chair

ZAP Notícias30 August 2026 at 22:30

Jamie Shinneman, 53, is a runner who trains for marathons with an unusual teammate: his wife Amy, 52. Amy uses a wheelchair for daily mobility, but in a marathon that chair becomes a path to freedom. The couple uses a three-wheeled competition wheelchair called a "duo bike," specially designed for this practice.

In training, Jamie runs while pushing Amy in the adapted chair, making routes that can reach 32 kilometers. Before each training session, Jamie prepares with a carbohydrate-rich breakfast and puts on his running shoes, following a routine similar to any runner. The dynamic between the two is clear: Jamie is described as the couple's "engine," providing the driving force, while Amy acts as the "compass," charting the path to follow.

This partnership allows the couple to participate together in marathons, combining Jamie's passion for running with Amy's need for a mobility solution. The "duo bike" transforms the wheelchair into an instrument of sports participation, showing how sport can be adapted to include people with different abilities.
