Natural Park of Montesinho celebrates 47 years between nature protection and rules that still concern local populations

Jornal Nordeste30 August 2026 at 22:14

The Natural Park of Montesinho celebrated 47 years of existence, maintaining recognition of a landscape preserved over decades. The park, located in the northeastern Transmontano region, continues to be one of the most important natural spaces in Portugal.

The Co-management Commission, created in 2022, represented a milestone in land management, bringing municipalities and communities closer to decisions regarding the park. This structure allowed greater participation of local populations in management processes.

However, the park's first director recognizes that there are still rules and interventions that distance populations from land management. This tension between nature protection and the concerns of local communities remains a central challenge for the future of the park.
