Renewing a driving licence in Portugal has variable costs depending on the driver's age and the channel used to make the request. The Institute of Mobility and Transport charges 30 euros for drivers under 70 and 15 euros for those aged 70 or over. Requests made through IMT Online benefit from a 10% discount, reducing the amounts to 27 euros and 13.50 euros, respectively. Thus, a driver aged 70 or over who uses the online service pays only 13.50 euros for the renewal.
The price difference is associated with the licence holder's age and the chosen channel. Those who handle the process in person always pay the full amount, while those who use IMT Online get the 10% discount. In practice, the difference between a driver under 70 who renews in person and a driver aged 70 or over who renews online is 16.50 euros.
Although older drivers pay less per renewal, from the age of 70 renewal becomes mandatory every two years. Before that age, the timeframes vary according to the date the licence was obtained. For those who obtained their licence from 30 July 2016 onwards, the general rule provides for renewals every 15 years until age 60, followed by renewals at ages 60, 65 and 70, and then every two years.
From the age of 60, it is also necessary to present a medical certificate for Group 1 categories, which include category B used by most car drivers. IMT recommends that the renewal be requested six months before the expiry date, warning that letting the deadline pass can result in serious consequences, such as the need to take practical exams or, in extreme cases, obtain the driving licence again.
