Ovom Care Clinic, specialized in fertility and medically assisted reproduction, declared bankruptcy in Cascais, having closed its doors overnight without prior notice to patients.
This is the first time a clinic of this specialty has failed in Portugal since the medically assisted reproduction law came into force 20 years ago.
Ovom Care opened its doors in 2025, having been funded by venture capital, which may be at the root of its rapid extinction. Patients were suddenly left without access to their treatments and the embryos that had been created as part of the procedures.
The situation left many patients in despair, as many had ongoing treatments and genetic material stored at the clinic. The abrupt closure raises questions about the regulation and oversight of these clinics in Portugal.
