Pope calls for immediate release of kidnapped people and end to violence in Haiti

Açoriano Oriental30 August 2026 at 20:07

Pope Leo XIV called for the "immediate" release of kidnapped people in Haiti, after the Kenscoff massacre. The appeal was directed at those responsible for the kidnappings, demanding that victims be released immediately.

The Supreme Pontiff also appealed to Haitian authorities to ensure the population's safety and put an end to the violence in the country. Haiti is facing a severe security crisis, with gangs controlling large parts of the territory and carrying out violent attacks against civilians.

The Kenscoff massacre, which occurred in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan region, intensified international calls for action. Gang violence has caused mass displacements and a deep humanitarian crisis in the Caribbean nation.
