War with Iran drives up G7 debt by 16 billion

Eco30 August 2026 at 17:55

G7 countries have already assumed more than 16 billion dollars in financing costs compared to rates prior to the war between the USA and Iran, according to an analysis by the Financial Times. If interest rates remain at current levels, the increase could reach 34 billion by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

Almost all public debt issuances by G7 countries are now trading at rates higher than those recorded in February. The USA accounts for 10.6 billion dollars of the increase already seen and could pay an additional 21.7 billion by March 2027.

The rise in interest rates reflects investors' concerns about US public debt and inflation caused by the conflict. The United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Japan are also among the countries affected by pressure on energy prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
