G20 Finance Ministers to Discuss Global Economic Situation

Jornal Económico30 August 2026 at 17:53

The finance ministers and central bank governors of the G20 countries, under the U.S. presidency, met in Asheville, USA, on August 31 and September 1, to discuss the global economic and financial situation. During the meeting, budgetary imbalances between nations will be analyzed, as well as cryptocurrencies and their regulation, in a context of growing uncertainty due to the White House's tariff policies and U.S. debt.

U.S. federal government debt recently surpassed, for the first time, the $40 trillion mark, which represents approximately €34.3 billion. This increase was driven by the large tax cuts package approved by Congress in the summer of 2025, combined with the impact of Supreme Court decisions on tariffs. At the same time, interest rates on 10 and 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds reached their highest levels in 19 and 25 years, respectively.

Sovereign debt will be another central topic during the meeting, with Washington advocating for greater transparency and faster restructuring when countries face difficulties. The Treasury Department states that the Trump administration has been implementing new tariffs and intensifying the trade war with Canada, arguing that it has focused on correcting global trade imbalances to benefit American workers.

U.S. authorities consider that digital assets, such as cryptocurrencies, are a key element of the debate, with discussions on the need to modernize financial regulation and supervision, reduce regulatory and market friction, and foster digital financial innovation. The meeting is expected to focus on establishing clearer legal and regulatory frameworks and strengthening the fight against illicit activities associated with these assets.

Russia promises more attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructures

Russia announced on Sunday, August 30, that it is preparing "massive attacks" against Ukraine's energy sector infrastructures, in response to Kiev's continued attacks on civilian facilities and the Russian oil complex. During last winter, Moscow had already devastated Ukraine's energy sector, leaving millions of people without electricity and heating. Ceasefire negotiations remain stalled since the United States became involved in the war against Iran, in February, with contacts between Russians and Ukrainians limited to the exchange of war prisoners and soldiers' bodies.
