European Union says it respects Iceland's "no" and calls the country a "close partner"

Jornal Económico30 August 2026 at 17:14

The European Union stated on Sunday, August 30, that it respects the decision of the Icelandic people not to resume negotiations to join the European community. The European Commission, through a spokesperson, stated that it "takes note of the referendum result" and respects Iceland's democratic choice.

The consultative referendum, held on Saturday, resulted in a victory for "no" with 52.8% against 47.2% for "yes". Iceland's Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, guaranteed that she will respect the result of the popular consultation.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, reiterated that Iceland "continues to be one of the closest and most trustworthy partners" of the EU, namely through the European Economic Area. Costa spoke with Frostadóttir and both expressed a desire to continue strengthening bilateral relations.

Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009, during the economic crisis that shook the country, but suspended negotiations in 2013. The following government announced in 2015 that the country was no longer a candidate. The current center-left coalition, which has been governing since 2024, included the holding of this referendum in its program. The debate preceding the vote was marked by issues such as national sovereignty, control of natural resources — especially fishing — and the cost of living, in a context of uncertainty caused by threats of annexation of neighboring Greenland by United States President Donald Trump.

Russia promises more attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructures

Russia announced on Sunday, August 30, that it is preparing "massive attacks" against Ukraine's energy sector infrastructures, in response to Kiev's continued attacks on civilian facilities and the Russian oil complex. During last winter, Moscow had already devastated Ukraine's energy sector, leaving millions of people without electricity and heating. Ceasefire negotiations remain stalled since the United States became involved in the war against Iran, in February, with contacts between Russians and Ukrainians limited to the exchange of war prisoners and soldiers' bodies.
