The suction entrapment that could have caused the death of the Irish couple in Cullera, a rare but lethal accident

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General30 August 2026 at 16:27

The tragic death of an Irish couple during their vacation in Cullera brought the focus to an apparently harmless element that on this occasion could have been lethal, according to the main hypothesis that agents of the Almussafes Judicial Police Team are investigating. This is the system that sucks in and circulates the water in spas and jacuzzis, a mechanism that could be the reason that ended the lives of Thomasina Tobin, née McArdle, aged 51, and her husband Patrick Joseph Tobin, aged 48. The phenomenon is known as "suction entrapment," a rare but potentially lethal accident.
