'We are standing firm,' says Maduro when publishing prison photos

oglobo30 August 2026 at 16:41

The ousted Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, stated on his social media this Sunday that he is "standing firm," while publishing photos of the New York prison where he has been detained since his capture by American forces. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas in an American military operation in January. They are held in a prison in Brooklyn, accused of drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession - charges both deny.

In the two photos published, Maduro wears a gray sweatshirt while making the peace sign with his hands. He appears to have lost considerable weight since his capture. The photos, although published this Sunday, date, according to the camera timestamp, from June 25.

"I send these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the noble people who love us," he wrote on the messaging application Telegram. "I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love."
