Académico de Viseu-FC Porto: 'Refereeing has to resolve this duality of criteria'

Now30 August 2026 at 16:27

Mário Figueiredo, academic from Viseu, commented on his team's defeat against FC Porto and devoted a large part of his address to the refereeing issue. The coach considered that there is a "dual criteria" in the referees' decisions that needs to be resolved, suggesting that the evaluation criteria have been inconsistent throughout the competition.

Figueiredo also acknowledged the quality of the opponent, highlighting the defensive solidity demonstrated by the Porto team during the match. The coach praised FC Porto's defensive organization as one of the factors that hindered his team's attacks.

Beyond the defensive component, the academic from Viseu also pointed to attacking efficiency as one of FC Porto's main weapons. This combination of solidity at the back and quality in the attacking phase was decisive for the favorable outcome for the Porto side in the match.

Winning without communicating is only winning half...

An opinion article in Jornal do Algarve criticizes Italian coach Francesco Farioli, of FC Porto, for not making any effort to communicate in Portuguese, even after 13 months at the club. The author argues that, although FC Porto is winning on the pitch — being the undefeated leader after three rounds —, it is losing the game of respect for the local community by continuing to hold press conferences and official communications exclusively in English and Italian. Comparing with examples like Bobby Robson, who spoke Portuguese in Porto, or Pep Guardiola, who learned German quickly, the author argues that this stance sends the message that the coach is "just passing through" and does not need the fans. He concludes that "winning without communicating is only winning half."
