Amazon will definitively shut down Amazon Mechanical Turk on September 30th, one month after the announcement. The digital work platform, created in 2005, operated for more than 21 years as a marketplace where businesses could hire people to perform simple tasks that computers at the time had difficulty executing. The service had already stopped accepting new users before this final decision.
The platform was one of the pioneers in the concept of collaborative work that combines humans and technology. For two decades, it allowed businesses to rely on workers for tasks such as data classification, content verification, and other activities that required basic human intervention. This model anticipated much of what would become the relationship between human labor and computational systems.
The closure comes in a context where artificial intelligence has evolved significantly and can now perform many of the tasks that previously required human intervention through Mechanical Turk. Amazon states that AI has surpassed one of its "mothers," meaning it has exceeded the capabilities that motivated the creation of the platform more than two decades ago. This technological substitution marks the end of an era for distributed digital work.
