Chega questions Minister of National Defence about alleged use of military helicopter by Rubina Leal

dnoticias.pt30 August 2026 at 14:41

The Chega party questioned the Minister of National Defence about an alleged use of a military helicopter to transport Rubina Leal, president of the Madeira Legislative Assembly. The matter is generating political controversy, with the party requesting clarification about the circumstances of the episode.

The question was presented by deputy Francisco Gomes, from Chega, in the Assembly of the Republic. The request for clarification was registered on August 19 with number 2472/XVII/1st, having been made public only today, almost two weeks after its formal submission.

According to the parliamentary question, Rubina Leal was transported in an EH101 Merlin helicopter from the Portuguese Air Force, on a route between Madeira and Porto Santo, on August 15. The party wants to know if this transport was properly authorized and under what conditions it took place.

The government has a maximum deadline of 30 days to respond to the question, in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly of the Republic. This is not the first time that the use of military resources by regional political figures has generated public debate in Portugal.
