Russian mercenaries, belonging to the Africa Corps, formerly the Wagner Group, played a decisive role in helping the Niger Military Junta suppress the coup that occurred in the capital Niamey during the night from Friday to Saturday. Russian support was fundamental for the junta, backed by the Kremlin, to regain control of the situation in the African country. The Russian ambassador to Niger, Viktor Voropayev, publicly admitted in recent hours that the Nigerien authorities requested help from the Russian contingent deployed in the country to regain control after the coup attempt.
