Between 2020 and 2025: 80.3% of Burned Area in High-Risk Rural Fire Territories

Notícias Portugal30 August 2026 at 10:25

Between 2020 and 2025, mainland Portugal recorded a total of 50,218 fires with an identifiable origin. Although only about 31% of these fires started in areas classified as high and very high fire danger, which occupy only 30.6% of the territory's surface area, these zones were responsible for 80.3% of the total area burned during this period.

The North and Central regions stood out as the most affected, together representing 90.7% of the burned area. The North accounted for 42.1% of the affected area and the Central region for 48.6%. This predominance is associated with the fact that forests and scrubland occupy 84.5% and 92.6% of the high and very high fire danger areas, respectively, with 77.6% of the scrubland cover and 47.0% of the forest in mainland Portugal located in these risk categories.

An additional analysis reveals that 69.6% of the surface area in the most fire-prone zones is located more than 15 minutes away from a fire brigade. The situation is further compounded by the significant presence of interfaces between urban areas and combustible vegetation, with 8,168 km of direct interface and 1,373 km of indirect interface identified, which increases the risk of fire propagation. The data is from the National Statistics Institute.
