Club suspends flights in São Conrado after colonel dies in hang glider crash

The São Conrado Free Flight Club decided to suspend flights on Saturday (29) following the death of Army colonel Álvaro Roberto Cruz Ferreira Lima, 63, who was retired. The military officer fell from a hang glider into the sea at São Conrado Beach, in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, on Friday (28).

Lima was pulled from the water by Fire Department teams in cardiac arrest and received first aid at the scene. He was then taken to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries.

The military officer leaves behind a wife and four children. The colonel's family members went to the Medical Examiner's Office (IML) on Saturday and were deeply shaken, but declined to give interviews to the press.

According to information obtained by TV Globo, Lima had been in the habit of hang gliding since he was young. The São Conrado Free Flight Club made the decision to suspend activities as a precaution following the accident that resulted in the military officer's death.
