Resident associations and other civil organizations have called for this Sunday (30) at 10am a protest at the Lagoa heliport in Rio de Janeiro with the motto "Rio free of helicopters without law." The organizing group is calling for an end to helicopter flights over residential areas and stricter oversight of companies operating panoramic tours in the city.
The protest was prompted by an accident that killed four people earlier this month, which renewed concerns about flight safety in urban zones. The Urca Residents Association (Amour), one of the participating organizations, says the group is not opposed to the tourist activity but criticizes the excessive noise and safety risks the activity brings to residents.
According to Amour, this is not a new movement. The association reports having sought restrictions on helicopter flights over residential areas for decades. In 2012, the organization participated in a mobilization that had the support of Carlos Minc, who held a secretary position at the time.
