Anthony Garotinho, candidate for governor of Rio de Janeiro for Republicanos, classified as "absurd" the decision of the Regional Electoral Court that prohibited him from using public funds in his campaign. The determination also prevents him from appearing in the free electoral airtime on radio and TV and from participating in debates. All magistrates followed the report of rapporteur Bruno Bodart, and the decision was published on Thursday.
The measure results from an action filed by the coalition of Eduardo Paes, from PSD, another candidate for the fluminense government. In posts on social media, Garotinho stated that he will appeal the decision, which he considered "illegal".
The central basis of the determination is Garotinho's conviction for administrative impropriety, which became final last year. The process involved fraud in the "Saúde em Movimento" project, which occurred during the management of former Governor Rosinha Garotinho, his wife, in the years 2005 and 2006, when the politician held the position of State Secretary.
