The PS deputy in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, Sílvia Sousa Silva, questioned the Regional Government about the capacity to implement an effective model of directed grazing in the prevention of rural fires. The parliamentarian asked for concrete answers about how the regional executive plans to use cattle as an instrument for vegetation fuel management and fire prevention.
Sílvia Sousa Silva accused the president of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, of having changed his position on the use of directed grazing only after the occurrence of major fires in the region. The deputy suggested that this matter should have been addressed earlier and more proactively.
Directed grazing consists of using animals, namely cattle, to control combustible vegetation in rural areas, thereby reducing the risk of fires. This approach has been pointed out by experts as one of the complementary strategies in forest fire prevention.
The question arose in the context of the fires that affected Madeira, highlighting the need to debate fire risk prevention strategies in the region. The PS delegation wants to know about the timeline and resources allocated to this measure by the Regional Government.
