Floods that left 157 dead in Nepal may have been generated by a 600m ice block

The floods that killed 157 people in Nepal may have been caused by a massive 600-meter block of ice that broke off from a glacier and fell into a river on the border with Tibet, according to scientists quoted by the New York Times. This phenomenon, called an ice avalanche, may have been accelerated by rising temperatures due to climate change, as satellite images show that snow cover had disappeared the day before the tragedy. An earthquake hit the region hours earlier, but it is still unclear how the two events are connected, and the US Geological Survey reported that the landslide itself may have generated a seismic signal mistaken for an earthquake.

10 minutes: man who ran over 16 people in Albufeira held in preventive detention

A 51-year-old man was placed in preventive detention after running over 16 people in Albufeira, in the Algarve, last Sunday. He tested positive for alcohol in the blood with 1.29 grams per liter and was in possession of two driving licenses whose authenticity is being investigated. The Public Prosecutor's Office is charging him with six crimes, including attempted qualified homicide and dangerous driving, with the judge agreeing to the preventive detention request.
