The councilors from the Socialist Party (PS) in the Câmara Municipal de Guimarães publicly questioned a meeting between the president of the municipality and the ambassador of Israel in Portugal. The elected officials wanted to know the details and the substance of the conversations held during this diplomatic meeting.
Following the questioning, the socialist councilors specifically asked if the humanitarian situation in Gaza was addressed during the meeting with the ambassador. They wanted to understand if the municipality raised concerns about the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The PS members also questioned whether respect for international law was addressed in the context of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. This concern reflects the position of various Portuguese political forces on the need to defend compliance with international standards in armed conflict situations.
The Câmara Municipal de Guimarães, led by the PSD, has not specified to date the matters discussed in the diplomatic meeting with Israeli authorities, leaving unanswered the questions raised by the opposition councilors about the municipality's positioning regarding the situation in Gaza.
