Between August 31 and September 3, Microsoft 365 suffered its worst outage of the year, leaving millions of users without access to essential services. For four days, email was stuck in Exchange Online, Teams started failing, and files stored on SharePoint and OneDrive became unreachable. The interruption affected businesses and users worldwide who depend on these services for their daily work.
The failure originated from a Microsoft infrastructure problem, which took several days to be fully resolved. During this period, many organizations had to seek temporary alternatives to maintain their operations, causing significant losses in terms of productivity and communication.
Interestingly, Office 2024, the traditional standalone version of Microsoft's productivity suite, was not affected by this outage. This is because it functions independently from the cloud, not relying on Microsoft 365's online services to work. The incident has once again raised questions about the vulnerability of completely cloud-based solutions and the importance of having alternatives available.
