News in public transport: thousands of passengers will be able to exchange the current pass for another costing only €20

Postal do Algarve15 September 2026 at 17:00

The Green Rail Pass, which allows rail travel on most of the national network for 20 euros monthly, will be extended to CP urban services in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto. The measure comes into operation between September 16 and 22, coinciding with European Mobility Week, and includes the urban lines covered by the Navegante and Andante systems.

This change allows passengers who use the train exclusively for commuting between home and work to no longer need more expensive intermodal passes. The goal is to simplify the use of rail transport and reduce the monthly expenses of those who depend on this mode of transport.

The examples published by the Government show the impact of the measure. A worker living in Vila Nova de Famalicão who commutes daily to downtown Porto currently pays 60 euros monthly and will be able to pay only 20 euros with the new pass. Another case involves a passenger from Monte Abraão, in Sintra, who works in Entrecampos, in Lisbon. The savings can reach 480 euros annually, depending on the route and the tickets currently used.

The Green Rail Pass maintains the possibility of leisure travel on the covered rail network, but does not cover Alfa Pendular services or first-class travel on Intercidades trains. The estimated annual financial impact of the measure is around 1.5 million euros and is part of the government's tariff simplification strategy and promotion of sustainable mobility.

Why this matters

Passengers who use the train daily in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto will be able to significantly reduce transport costs, with potential savings of up to 480 euros per year. The measure directly affects commuters who currently combine several transport tickets, simplifying access to CP urban trains and encouraging the use of public transport instead of the car.
