Balasar: Archdiocese of Braga Opens Doors of New Shrine Dedicated to the Blessed Alexandrina

Agência ECCLESIA15 September 2026 at 17:17

The Archdiocese of Braga will celebrate on October 11 the dedication of the new Eucharistic Shrine of Balasar, a temple with capacity for approximately 1,800 seated people, built with an investment of 14 million euros. The day before, on the 10th, the transfer of the remains of Alexandrina Maria da Costa (1904–1955), the beatified known as Alexandrina of Balasar, will take place, in a ceremony presided by the Archbishop of Braga, D. José Cordeiro.

The dedication of the church and altar on Sunday is presided by the apostolic nuncio in Portugal, D. Andrés Carrascosa Coso. D. José Cordeiro emphasized that the infrastructure requires a community capable of supporting those who suffer, aspiring that the visitor "may find this door open and also find someone with time to listen," hoping that the testimony of the Blessed Alexandrina may arouse "a renewed motivation of hope in the Church and in the world."

The rector of the shrine, monsignor Manuel Casado Neiva, presented the goal of developing a continuous pastoral proposal, stating that the mission "is not to build a building, it is to build the living Church." The postulator of the canonization cause, Sister Emília Almeida, justified the attraction of devotees of all ages by the strength of "a simple life, a life given to others."

Official statistics record annually approximately 150,000 devotees at the tomb of the Portuguese mystic and 250,000 participants in regular celebrations. The complex was designed by Centro Ave Arte, based in Florence, articulating architecture and liturgy in a space with the symbolic form of a great biblical "tent," integrating bronze and limestone stones from the Fatima region. Civil authorities are preparing a logistical operation for road management and installation of outdoor screens to manage the expected crowd.

Why this matters

Residents of the parish of Balasar and the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim face a significant logistical operation with road management and outdoor screens to manage the expected crowd, with a regional impact expected due to the attraction of thousands of pilgrims, which will affect local traffic and tourism activities.

Von der Leyen denounces Russian behavior as "reckless and dangerous" after new incidents

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday classified Russia's behavior as "reckless and dangerous," after two incidents: a Russian warship fired emergency flares dangerously close to a Danish helicopter in international waters off Denmark, and a drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus before being destroyed by NATO fighter jets. Von der Leyen said these are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe that has intensified since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and affirmed that the EU is reinforcing collective deterrence and defense together with NATO and increasing pressure on Russia.

Rocha Peixoto Secondary School Prepares for Start of School Year in Atypical Context

Rocha Peixoto Secondary School, in Póvoa de Varzim, prepares for the start of the school year with a focus on stability after a period marked by delays in the grading of national exams and the reapprciation processes, which generated anxiety in students and families. The leadership, led by Luís Fabião, guarantees individual follow-up so that no decision dependent on final grades compromises the start of classes, relying on the Welcome Plan as a central tool. The entry into force of the new law restricting the use of mobile phones up to the 3rd cycle is another notable element, with the school viewing the measure as a pedagogical opportunity to reinforce concentration and in-person interaction. In a year under administrative pressure and legislative changes, ESRP is betting on proximity and organization to ensure a serene school environment.
