Mercadona maintains its leadership in food retail in Spain, according to the balance sheet for the first eight months of the year prepared by Worldpanel by Numerator, formerly known as Kantar. The chain controlled by Juan Roig holds 27.4% of the market share in terms of total sales, a value that is equivalent to the combined weight of its five main competitors: Carrefour, Lidl, Eroski, Dia and Consum.
However, Mercadona's growth stagnated compared to the same period of the previous year, registering only a slight advance of 0.1 percentage points in market share. This data contrasts with the dominant position the brand maintains in the Spanish retail sector.
The major concern for the Valencian chain relates to the evolution of buyer share, that is, the percentage of customers who make purchases at the brand. Mercadona lost 0.8 percentage points in this indicator, the largest negative adjustment recorded among all chains analyzed in the study, falling to 90.5% of total consumers.
