The Porto City Council will present a "new parking policy" for the city by the end of the year. The municipality announced its intention to reduce surface parking and give priority to residents in the areas where this measure is implemented.
The mayor, Pedro Duarte, highlighted that he does not intend to declare "war on the automobile," but committed to limiting the space dedicated to cars in the city. This position represents a change in how urban space is allocated, without completely eliminating the possibility of circulation and parking.
The measure comes in a context of valuing public space and promoting more sustainable forms of mobility. The new policy should mainly affect the central and most densely populated areas of Porto, where the pressure on parking is most intense.
