NATO shot down a drone over Lithuania for the first time. Allied Atlantic fighters intercepted the aircraft overnight as it entered the country's airspace, where it remained for about half an hour. The drone reportedly entered from Belarus and was "probably" carrying explosives.
The Lithuanian Air Force confirmed the incident and reported that NATO fighters managed to neutralize the threat. This time it was not about ducks, as happened on previous occasions, but rather a drone with explosive potential.
The incident occurs in a context of growing tension in the region. On Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that attacks near Atlantic Alliance territory will only increase support for Ukraine in the war against the large-scale invasion launched by Russia.
Lithuania is a NATO member country and borders Belarus, a country allied with Russia, which explains the region's vulnerability to this type of incursions.
