The transfer of dairy farmers to beef production in Portugal will continue in the coming years. It is estimated that around 200 producers have converted their dairy farms to beef production over the past six years, with the processes already completed or underway.
The number of farmers making this transition could still increase significantly. Currently, more than three thousand suckler cow rights are being negotiated with Brussels as part of the POSEI review, the European Union support program for agriculture in the outermost regions.
This reconversion trend reflects the difficulties faced by the dairy sector and the growing demand for beef in the market. Farmers who transition to beef production benefit from suckler cow rights, which allow them to receive specific subsidies for beef livestock activity.
