iib Bank and Maense Association in Portugal Partner to Support Cape Verdean Diaspora

Jornal Económico15 September 2026 at 12:10

The Intercontinental Investment Bank (iib) Cabo Verde and the Maense Association in Portugal are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening ties with the Cape Verdean diaspora. The agreement will be formalized in the late afternoon of September 18, Friday, at the Cape Verde Cultural Center in Lisbon, at a ceremony that will feature the presence of the administrator of iib Cabo Verde, Aicha Correia, and the president of the Maense Association in Portugal, Carlos Frederico.

The memorandum provides for the joint development of initiatives in social, educational, cultural, and financial areas. These include support for AMP community projects, financial education and literacy activities, capacity building and employment initiatives, as well as the exploration of financial solutions and services more suited to the needs of the Cape Verdean diaspora.

The iib Group began operating in the Cape Verdean market in July 2010. In May of this year, the banking institution announced that it had again joined the global Chevening scholarship program, funded by the British government.

The Maense Association in Portugal, founded in 2003, has several branches throughout the European diaspora and works to support the social and community integration of Cape Verdean citizens outside the archipelago. This year, the AMP also signed a cooperation agreement with the Higher Institute of Entre Douro e Vouga.

Why this matters

The Cape Verdean community in Portugal, estimated at hundreds of thousands of people, could directly benefit from financial literacy and employment programs, as well as financial services tailored to their needs. This agreement represents one of the first formal partnerships between a Cape Verdean banking institution and a diaspora association in Portugal, potentially serving as a model for future initiatives.

Deco Proteste warns: lower income tax withholdings don't mean paying less tax. Bill may come later

Deco Proteste warned that the reduction in IRS source withholdings may leave more money available in salary in the final months of the year, but doesn't necessarily mean paying less tax. According to the consumer defense organization, taxpayers may have to settle accounts with the tax authorities when they file their annual IRS return, so they should be careful not to confuse immediate cash in hand with an actual reduction in tax burden.
