The North Sea is undergoing a significant transformation in its marine populations. What was a rarity nine years ago now represents about one-fifth of fish catches in the region. The nets of Belgian fishermen, which previously brought up mainly crabs and cod, now bring tons of octopuses and squid.
The cause of this change is global warming. The temperature in the southern North Sea, a shallow water region, has risen by approximately 4°C over the last hundred years. This change in climatic conditions created a perfect habitat for octopuses to multiply, as their eggs need water to be between 9 and 11°C to develop and hatch.
The food chain of the North Sea has changed drastically, with consequences for the entire marine ecosystem. This transformation was explained by Hans Polet, scientific director of the Flemish Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research, in an interview with Swiss public broadcaster RTS. The warming of the waters is favouring species that previously did not reproduce in this region, replacing the traditional species that fishermen were accustomed to catching.
