MEPs today called for greater investment from the European Union in forest fire prevention, proposing the creation of a European fund dedicated to climate disasters. This fund would allow territories to be prepared and coordinated combat actions to be implemented among member countries.
The request came during a debate in the European Parliament dedicated to the lessons from last summer, when several heat waves caused one of the most devastating forest fire seasons in Europe.
According to data mentioned in the debate, more than 700,000 hectares were consumed by flames during that fire season.
MEPs highlighted the changes observed in recent years and the need to strengthen preparedness and joint response to these extreme climate phenomena.
