Porto's Municipal Theater will open the 2026/2027 season with two days of free programming on September 18th and 19th. The initiative takes theater, performance, live cinema, and music outside the performance halls, occupying the Rivoli, Rua de Passos Manuel, and D. João I Square. The goal is to transform the city center into a giant stage, bringing art closer to people passing through the city.
One of the most remarkable proposals is "Efectos Especiales," by Luciana Acuña and Alejo Moguillansky, which transforms Porto into the setting for a film created in real time. A performer traverses the city confronting the architecture and special effects such as rain, snow, and colored smoke, in a three-time one-shot sequence. On the last pass, the audience can join the action. The show takes place at 7:30 PM on both days, between Rua de Passos Manuel and D. João I Square, with free entry and a 6+ rating.
On Friday, September 18th, at 9:30 PM, artist Mindy Seu presents the national premiere of "A SEXUAL HISTORY OF THE INTERNET," an interactive performance that crosses stories about sexuality and technology. The audience is invited to form a reading choir through scripts shared on mobile phones, requiring the Instagram application. The session is free but requires ticket collection starting at 11:00 AM, and has an 18+ rating.
On Saturday, September 19th, D. João I Square hosts three concerts by the Portuguese ensemble Slide Bones Symbiosis at 3 PM, 5 PM, and 7 PM, with performances of about 20 minutes each. At 4 PM, there is a free workshop with Né Barros in the Rivoli Rehearsal Hall, upon mandatory registration. The evening ends at 9:30 PM with the concert by Unsafe Space Garden, a collective from Guimarães presenting new work sung in Portuguese, crossing references from orality and fado with contemporary languages such as disco, funk, and drum & bass.
