Netherlands displays major collection with 88 works by Van Gogh for the first time in 40 years

The Kröller-Müller Museum, located in Otterlo, in the center of the Netherlands, inaugurated on Tuesday a historic exhibition bringing together for the first time in 40 years the 88 paintings by Vincent van Gogh from its private collection. The exhibition, titled "Van Gogh, all our paintings," can be visited until January 3, 2027.

Among the exhibited works are "The Potato Eaters," from 1885, depicting peasant life, and "Café Terrace at Night," from 1888. The museum houses one of the largest private collections of works by the Dutch painter, but rarely brings together all the paintings in a single exhibition.

According to the museum, the exhibition presents all the paintings in relation to the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. The institution stated in a press release that this is "one of the largest Van Gogh exhibitions of this century."

Why this matters

This rare exhibition offers art lovers a unique opportunity to see nearly all of Van Gogh's works belonging to the museum reunited, something that hadn't happened in four decades. The exhibition allows for a complete appreciation of the Dutch painter's work, from his early works focused on peasant life to his most famous pieces from his period in Arles.
