The Supreme Federal Court will hold starting at 10 a.m. today a historic plenary session to decide whether to authorize, for the first time in the Court's history, the investigation of one of its own ministers. The session takes place amid the most serious crisis faced by the STF in democratic times.
The case involves 52 messages sent to Minister Alexandre de Moraes by banker Daniel Vorcaro, of Banco Master, in the weeks preceding his arrest on suspicion of running the largest financial fraud ever recorded in the country.
The trial comes after weeks of erosion that resulted in a ten-point increase in Brazilians' distrust of the Court, according to a Quaest poll released yesterday. The survey revealed that 56% of the population says it "does not trust" the STF, the highest level in the historical series.
The decision to bring the case to the plenary was made by the court president, Edson Fachin, last week, after intense pressure for him to intervene in the face of the confrontation climate among the ministers.
