The Attorney General's Office opened a criminal investigation into the national director of the Judicial Police, Carlos Cabreiro, for suspicions of abuse of power and false statements in court. The investigation arose after a complaint filed in July by David Freitas, coordinator of the PJ itself, directly to the Attorney General.
Carlos Cabreiro is suspected of having lied in court and of having ordered a prohibited wiretap in the hacker Rui Pinto case. The complaint against the national director was filed by the PJ coordinator, David Freitas, who is also Cabreiro's colleague.
David Freitas's wife was one of the inspectors who investigated the Rui Pinto case, the Portuguese hacker who revealed Football Leaks and who is currently on trial. This inspector is herself being tried for false statements, which is believed to have motivated the complaint filed by her husband.
