Caring for someone at home? There is support available for those in the Algarve who do not need the Informal Carer Status

Postal do Algarve15 September 2026 at 10:50

The Info.Cuidador 2.0 project, promoted by the Portuguese Red Cross through the Tavira Humanitarian Centre, offers free remote counselling and support for informal carers in the Sotavento algarvio region. People who care for someone for at least two months can benefit from this service, even without having the Informal Carer Status formally recognised, provided they meet the project's admission criteria.

Support is provided by professionals from various fields, including nursing, psychology, medicine, physiotherapy, social work and nutrition. Support uses video calls and digital tools via mobile phone or tablet, and may include remote monitoring of the person being cared for. The team also provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week telephone counselling, and lends technological equipment free of charge with support for its use.

The second edition of the project expanded coverage to seven municipalities: Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Faro, Olhão and São Brás de Alportel. The target set by Portugal Inovação Social 2030 is for 200 informal carers to show positive progress in indicators of burden, quality of life, wellbeing, depression and anxiety. The new project follows a first phase developed between 2020 and 2023, with the team strengthened by the addition of a doctor and more nursing and psychology professionals.

To be referred or to obtain more information, interested parties can contact the Tavira Humanitarian Centre on 281 324 301 or 281 323 473, or by email at [email protected]. In Faro, referrals can also be made through the Social Attendance and Support Service, on 289 870 869 or 289 870 870, or by email at [email protected].

Why this matters

Readers in the Algarve who regularly provide care to family members or other people at home can access free support from health professionals without needing to have formal status recognised, provided they meet the project's criteria. The expanded coverage to new municipalities such as Faro and Olhão represents an expansion of social services in the region. This is an initiative funded by Portugal Inovação Social 2030, and the specific implementation period should be confirmed with the promoting entity.
